If fresh water is present inside a cylinder, it can cause the wall to lose more than 2mm of its thickness within six months. In salt water, this loss can exceed 5mm. (Diving cylinder walls are typically between 2 and 5mm thick). While testing of the diving cylinder remains at 2.5 years for an internal visual and 5 years for a full hydrostatic test in the UK, a more frequent visual inspection by a certified test centre for suit inflation cylinders is recommended.
